Hey, it’s Bryan from Oxide back with another FAQ Friday. One of the questions that we get is:
Why do you guys talk about how quiet the server is? Is it going into like a library or something? Like, is it important that it’s quiet? I’ve been in data centers that are loud. Why do you care how much it’s quiet?
And the truth is, of course, the actual, like, acoustics of the rack don’t matter that much. It is going into a data center. Data center can be a loud environment. It’s more what that sound represents. When you power on a server, a commodity server from the commodity vendors, and those fans are screaming at you, and you feel the air, and the air they’re blowing is cold, you know that, like, the fans don’t need to be cranked like this.
We are actually blowing cold air, and I know that those fans that are screaming, they’re doing so because they’ve either got a bad thermal control loop, what have you, and that noise that they’re making, it’s not the noise is the problem, it’s the power that represents.
When you’ve got fans that are cranked, you got a lot of power going to your fans. So we absolutely do pride ourselves on power efficiency, and that is very important. The fact that the rack happens to be quiet is a very visceral way to appreciate that, but ultimately, the driver here is power efficiency.
