Hey, it’s Bryan from Oxide, I’m back with another FAQ Friday. A question we get from time to time, maybe a less frequently asked question, but is:
Can I reuse my existing servers in the Oxide rack?
And that is, as my 13-year-old might say, that’s a womp womp. You definitely can’t do that. So sorry about that.
I know that’s disappointing. There are a bunch of reasons for that. We’ve architected the rack holistically. So we have a DC bus bar, for example. There’s actually no place for you to plug that traditional rack and stack server into. So I know that’s disappointing, but I get where the question’s coming from.
People wanna know about investment production. They wanna know, hey, I’ve got this existing stuff. I wanna add new stuff. How do I get them to cohabitate? And on the one hand, the bad news is no, you can’t bring that legacy to Oxide. The good news is that when you do have an Oxide rack, and you would say you’ve got a half-populated Oxide rack with 16 sleds in it, a next gen sled comes out.
You wanna use that great AMD Turin-based sled we’ve got. You can actually add those Turin-based sleds to the rack right along with those existing sleds, and your capacity just grows. When we’ve migrated capacity off of those old sleds, you can pull 'em out. So on the one hand, bad news for the existing investment in that legacy stuff.
Good news, great news for the stuff that ultimately one day will be legacy. The Oxide sleds you buy today, you’ve got great investment protection around them and around the Oxide rack.
